Pigs are highly intelligent animals with strong drives to root, explore, and socialise. Scientific research on enrichment provision has demonstrated clear welfare benefits — yet implementation in commercial farming remains inconsistent.
Pig enrichment is one of the most evidence-rich areas of farm animal welfare science, yet the gap between what research shows works and what is provided in commercial farms remains large. The EU requirement for enrichment has largely been met with minimally compliant, ineffective materials that satisfy legal text but not animal needs. Pigs in barren or under-enriched environments redirect their strong exploration and rooting drives onto pen mates — producing tail biting, ear biting, and aggression that cause pain and serious injury. The conventional response is surgical tail docking to reduce the target, which treats a symptom rather than addressing the underlying deprivation. Evidence is now overwhelming that providing appropriate enrichment — straw, compost, root vegetables, novel objects on rotation — reduces tail biting more effectively than docking. The cost barrier is real but modest relative to the welfare gain and the production losses avoided through reduced injury.
