Rainbow trout is one of the most widely farmed fish globally, produced in freshwater raceways and net pens across Europe, North America, and Asia. Their well-documented stress responses make welfare management both urgent and tractable.
Rainbow trout welfare is better understood scientifically than almost any other farmed fish species. Decades of research have established that trout experience stress in measurable, replicable ways, respond to analgesics when in pain, and show avoidance learning that suggests some form of aversive experience. This evidence base makes trout welfare both compelling and practically actionable: we know what causes suffering and we have tools to reduce it. High stocking densities cause chronic stress and disease susceptibility; reducing density improves welfare and product quality simultaneously. Pre-slaughter stunning — now practiced by some producers and required by law in several jurisdictions — provides humane insensibilisation before killing. Water quality management, particularly dissolved oxygen control, is a basic welfare requirement. The EU regulatory framework is more advanced for trout than for most other farmed fish species, though implementation and enforcement remain uneven across member states.
