Cattle feedlots concentrate tens of thousands of animals in confined outdoor pens for rapid weight gain before slaughter. The welfare implications of heat exposure, mud, respiratory disease, and lameness are significant and often underaddressed.
Feedlot cattle welfare presents multiple concurrent challenges driven by the structural features of intensive beef production. High-grain diets cause subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) — a painful and productivity-reducing digestive condition — in a significant proportion of intensively fed cattle. Hard, dry lot surfaces cause hoof wear and solar bruising; wet mud causes its own hoof and skin problems. Heat stress is a welfare crisis during summer in warm-climate feedlots: cattle cannot thermoregulate adequately without shade, and mortality events during heat waves involve suffering on large scale. Respiratory disease complex — the leading welfare and economic problem in feedlots — is driven by the stress of weaning, transport, mixing, and close confinement. While many welfare problems have known interventions (shade, transition diets, respiratory vaccination protocols, adequate pen drainage), adoption remains inconsistent because welfare requirements are poorly regulated in major beef-producing countries.
