Common carp is the most produced fish species globally, farmed for thousands of years across Asia and Europe. Despite their cultural importance and hardiness, welfare concerns around density, handling, and slaughter deserve attention.
Carp welfare is rarely discussed relative to salmonids, yet the scale of production and the cultural practices surrounding carp consumption create welfare issues affecting enormous numbers of animals. In intensive Chinese pond systems, extremely high stocking densities create chronic crowding stress and water quality degradation. The European tradition of live transport and home purchase of carp — particularly at Christmas — means that many individual fish experience prolonged confinement in deteriorating water conditions before being killed at home without stunning. The welfare outcome of home killing without prior insensibilisation is highly variable and often poor. Improved slaughter welfare for carp — requiring electrical stunning in commercial settings and providing guidance on humane home killing where live purchase continues — would address the most acute suffering. At farm level, improved water quality management and reduced stocking densities in intensive Chinese operations would deliver substantial aggregate welfare benefits.
