Yellowtail kingfish welfare is shaped by the tension between their active, pelagic lifestyle and the constraints of commercial cage or tank aquaculture. These are fast-swimming schooling fish that naturally range widely in open water — sea cage confinement limits this significantly. At commercial densities, the crowding stress manifests in aggression, fin damage, and reduced feeding efficiency. Handling sensitivity is a distinctive welfare concern: kingfish respond to netting, grading, and transport with acute stress responses that can cause sudden mortality — a welfare problem that simultaneously impacts production economics. Slaughter welfare varies dramatically by method: ice slurry immersion causes prolonged consciousness under thermal shock, while ikejime produces immediate insensibilisation through direct neural destruction. The adoption of ikejime or equivalent rapid-kill methods would substantially improve slaughter welfare for this premium species whose production is expanding globally.
