Heat stress causes significant suffering in cattle worldwide, reducing productivity, reproductive success, and immune function. As global temperatures rise, heat stress is becoming an increasingly severe welfare challenge for dairy and beef cattle.
Heat stress causes documented suffering in cattle: panting, drooling, clustering at water sources, seeking shade, and showing signs of distress are all observable indicators of thermal discomfort that exceed mere productivity concerns. At extreme temperatures, cattle can suffer hyperthermia, organ damage, and death. The welfare significance is magnified by climate change: regions where heat stress was historically seasonal are experiencing longer, more intense heat periods, and regions previously spared are entering vulnerable temperature ranges. The economic cost of heat stress creates alignment between welfare and productivity incentives — shade, water access, and ventilation improvements benefit both cattle welfare and farm economics. However, many low-income producers in tropical regions lack the resources to implement adequate heat mitigation, creating welfare inequity across global supply chains. Purchasing decisions that reward producers investing in heat management — and standards that mandate minimum shade and water provision — drive improvement.
