Cattle castration is a pervasive source of preventable pain that affects millions of animals annually. The evidence for pain during and after castration is clear: cortisol levels spike dramatically, feed intake drops, and pain-indicative behaviour persists for days after the procedure. The evidence for effective analgesia — lidocaine for the local block and NSAIDs for post-procedural pain — is equally clear: treated animals show significantly lower pain indicators. The welfare gap is not a knowledge gap but an implementation gap: the tools to eliminate most of the pain of castration exist and are affordable, but their adoption is inconsistent due to lack of regulatory requirement, producer inertia, and perceived cost. Veterinary guidelines in the UK, Australia, and increasingly the USA now recommend analgesia as standard practice. Consumer demand for beef from producers that use pain management during routine procedures creates market incentives that complement veterinary recommendation.
