Wolverines depend on persistent spring snowpack for denning and food caching — making them one of the wildlife species most directly threatened by climate-driven snow loss. Protecting their remaining habitat is both conservation and welfare imperative.
Wolverine welfare is fundamentally threatened by climate change through the loss of the persistent spring snow that defines their reproductive ecology. A female wolverine that cannot find adequate snow depth for a secure den faces reproductive failure — and the pups that don't survive are welfare losses before they can experience welfare. Adult wolverines in regions of declining snowpack face longer travel distances to find adequate denning sites, increasing energy expenditure and conflict with human land use. Trapping mortality — while often characterised as low-intensity — falls heavily on a species with very low reproductive rates: losing a breeding female to a trap can eliminate years of potential recruitment from that individual. Wolverine welfare and conservation are inseparable from climate action and from the political commitment to maintain their Threatened Species protections against the periodic pressures for delisting.
