Channel catfish are the most commercially farmed freshwater fish in the United States. Welfare challenges include crowding stress, poor water quality, and inadequate slaughter methods in large-scale pond systems.
Channel catfish welfare in pond aquaculture is shaped by stocking density, water quality, disease burden, and harvest/slaughter practices. Crowding suppresses immune function and elevates cortisol, increasing susceptibility to columnaris and ESC bacterial infections. Good welfare requires maintaining dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L, managing stocking density, and providing feed that meets nutritional needs without overfeeding and causing oxygen depletion. Harvesting by seining and transport to processing plants causes acute stress — stunning must be rapid and effective. Electrical stunning can be effective for catfish if properly calibrated, but many operations rely on gill-cutting without prior stunning. Welfare-conscious operators are adopting improved stunning protocols and minimising transit time between harvest and slaughter.
