Turkeys raised for meat face significant welfare risks during catching, transport, and slaughter. Inadequate stunning and mishandling cause preventable pain and distress at the end of their lives.
Turkey slaughter welfare is among the most significant and tractable welfare issues in commercial poultry production. Shackling conscious birds inverted causes pain from wing stress, dislocations, and anxiety. Water bath electrical stunning, the most common method, is only effective if birds enter the water properly — large toms frequently miss the bath or receive sub-threshold current, regaining consciousness before neck-cut. Welfare-forward operations are adopting controlled atmosphere systems that induce unconsciousness before shackling, eliminating the most distressing handling phase. Auditing slaughter plant compliance with stunning standards is essential — EU Regulation 1099/2009 and US HMSA provide regulatory frameworks, but enforcement is inconsistent. Consumer demand for higher-welfare turkey products and third-party audits create market pressure for improvement.
