Welfare Considerations

Sea turtle hatchlings disoriented by artificial light face exhaustion, dehydration and predation as they crawl inland toward lights rather than seaward. The suffering involved — small creatures crawling for hours in the wrong direction until they collapse — is entirely preventable through appropriate lighting choices. Nesting females deterred by light lose the opportunity to reproduce successfully, threatening population viability.
