Dwarf mongooses are highly social, cooperatively breeding mammals with strict dominance hierarchies. Zoo welfare depends on maintaining stable family groups, providing sentinel opportunities, and supporting their cooperative care behaviours.
Dwarf mongoose welfare in captivity is almost entirely social in nature — individuals housed without an appropriate group suffer profound stress, reduced immune function, and stereotypic behaviour. The dominant breeding pair must be identified and their status respected in enclosure design; removing or threatening dominant individuals disrupts the entire group. Enclosures need multiple elevated sentinel posts, burrow systems or nest boxes, and varied substrate for foraging. Feeding enrichment that mimics insect hunting (buried mealworms, puzzle feeders) engages the group cooperatively. Zoos should avoid splitting established groups for transfers unless welfare-justified, as reintegration is difficult. Group size should be maintained above five individuals to allow cooperative care and sentinel rotation. Keeper familiarity is important — dwarf mongooses habituate to consistent keepers and show stress responses to unfamiliar humans.
