Tilapia welfare is largely invisible to consumers despite the species being one of the most consumed fish worldwide. Intensive production at high stocking densities creates chronic stress even when crowding suppresses overt aggression. Water quality management is critical — tilapia tolerate ammonia and low oxygen better than salmonids, but this tolerance can mask welfare-poor conditions. Male tilapia aggression in lower-density systems causes fin erosion, injury, and stress-mediated growth suppression in subordinates. All-male populations produced through hormonal sex reversal avoid breeding resource competition but raise separate welfare questions about the hormonal treatment process. Slaughter by ice slurry is the primary welfare concern at end of life — tilapia remain conscious for several minutes during chilling. Electrical stunning prior to chilling or processing is feasible and increasingly adopted by welfare-conscious producers.
