Shrimp Welfare in Aquaculture: Sentience Evidence and Farming System Implications

Farmed shrimp are among the most consumed seafood globally, yet their welfare is almost entirely unaddressed in production standards. Growing evidence for crustacean sentience demands urgent attention to shrimp farming practices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Shrimp welfare is the most numerically significant gap in farmed animal welfare advocacy. With hundreds of billions of shrimp farmed annually, even small per-individual improvements would represent enormous aggregate welfare gains. Eyestalk ablation — the removal of the eyestalk containing hormones that suppress reproduction — is performed without anaesthesia on billions of female broodstock shrimp and is almost certainly painful. Intensive stocking at extreme densities causes chronic crowding stress and disease vulnerability. Slaughter by freezing, boiling, or bisection without prior stunning causes prolonged suffering. Shrimp Welfare Project is the leading organisation developing practical interventions — including pre-slaughter ice stunning (which may reduce consciousness) and pressure for eyestalk ablation alternatives. Consumer awareness and certification scheme inclusion are the most tractable near-term interventions.
