Drought is one of the most severe welfare threats facing wild African elephants. Water and food scarcity causes physiological stress, family group disruption, and increased mortality, particularly among calves and elderly individuals.
Drought welfare for African elephants involves acute physical suffering — dehydration, starvation, and exhaustion — alongside social disruption as herds fracture under the pressure of long-distance movements to find water. Young calves cannot keep pace with adult herd movement to distant water sources, and maternal death during drought often leads to calf abandonment. Orphan rescue operations during major drought events save some individuals but cannot address the structural scale of suffering. Conservation responses with the greatest welfare impact include maintaining or restoring permanent water points in key dry-season refugia, reducing poaching pressure so surviving herds can recover breeding success, and supporting climate-adaptive land management that preserves elephant movement corridors. Human-elephant conflict response that prioritises non-lethal deterrence protects elephants whose welfare is already compromised by resource scarcity.
