Goat kid welfare in dairy systems involves multiple overlapping challenges. Separation from the dam causes measurable distress — elevated cortisol, distress vocalisation, and disrupted sleep in both dam and kid for several days. Extended dam-rearing before separation reduces this impact significantly. Disbudding without local anaesthetic causes acute pain followed by prolonged post-procedural sensitivity — local anaesthetic and NSAIDs are both effective and inexpensive. Colostrum management is a welfare and survival issue: kids that fail to receive adequate colostrum in the first hours develop fatal infections. Male surplus kids — a structural problem in dairy production — deserve welfare consideration equal to females; rapid culling is preferable to extended poor conditions. Higher-welfare dairy goat systems increasingly include delayed separation, pain-managed disbudding, and on-farm male calf welfare protocols.
