Common carp is the most farmed freshwater fish globally and a major recreational fishing species. Welfare considerations span intensive pond farming, catch-and-release practices, and transport conditions across diverse production systems.
Carp welfare spans two very different contexts. In aquaculture, the primary concerns are chronic crowding stress in high-density pond systems, water quality management, and slaughter practices — most carp are killed by live chilling or asphyxiation without stunning, causing prolonged consciousness during dying. Transport welfare is a significant issue in the live carp trade common in Central and Eastern Europe, where fish are transported in plastic bags or crowded tanks with inadequate oxygenation. In recreational fishing, catch-and-release welfare depends heavily on handling technique — prolonged air exposure, dry handling, and deep hooking all reduce survival. Welfare-conscious anglers wet-hands before handling, minimise air exposure, use barbless hooks, and return fish in water. Aquaculture welfare improvement requires stocking density limits, water quality standards, and pre-slaughter stunning protocols.
