Decades of research on pig enrichment has produced clear evidence about which types of enrichment effectively reduce aggression, tail biting, and stereotypy. This science should drive farm design and management decisions.
Pig enrichment science provides one of the clearest evidence bases in farmed animal welfare research. The hierarchy of effectiveness is well-established: organic, manipulable, destructible materials (straw, compost, mushroom substrate, wood) are far more effective than hard, fixed enrichment objects like chains or rubber rings. The reason is motivational — pigs are highly motivated rooting foragers, and enrichment that satisfies rooting motivation addresses the underlying behavioural need rather than providing a displacement activity. Novelty matters: rotating enrichment types and ensuring daily introduction of new materials maintains engagement. Enrichment provision is among the most cost-effective pig welfare interventions — straw-based systems reduce veterinary costs from tail biting injuries, reduce aggression-related performance losses, and improve FCR through reduced chronic stress. Regulatory requirements that specify "sufficient quantity" without specifying material type fail to capture this quality distinction.
