Broiler welfare science has advanced significantly since the 2000s, identifying the key variables determining welfare outcomes with precision. Breed selection is the single highest-impact intervention — slow-growing breeds show dramatically lower lameness, better cardiovascular health, and higher activity levels. However, they require more feed and time, increasing production costs. The Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), adopted by many major food companies, specifies breed, stocking density, lighting, and enrichment standards that together deliver substantial welfare improvement. Maximum stocking density of 30 kg/m² with litter management, 6 hours dark period, and access to enrichment objects are evidence-based standards. Footpad dermatitis scoring is now widely used as a welfare audit indicator — scores above 20 indicate litter management failure. Consumer and corporate pressure for BCC adoption has been the fastest driver of broiler welfare improvement globally in recent years.
