Scallops are bivalves farmed and wild-caught in large volumes globally. Their welfare status depends on evolving evidence about bivalve sentience — and their unique behaviours suggest more complexity than other shellfish.
Scallop welfare occupies the same uncertain territory as other bivalves — the absence of a centralised nervous system makes conscious experience in the vertebrate sense unlikely, but their capacity for escape behaviour and environmental responsiveness is more complex than simple filter feeders like oysters. The swimming escape response to predators, triggered by visual and chemical cues, suggests integrated sensorimotor processing beyond simple reflexes. Whether this processing involves anything resembling subjective experience remains genuinely uncertain. Most welfare scientists place scallops below the threshold of moral concern for welfare purposes, but acknowledge the uncertainty. Wild-capture by dredging causes collateral damage to non-target species and seabed habitats — a welfare concern for bycatch species even if scallops themselves lack welfare significance. Farmed scallops on suspended culture lines have lower environmental impact. Consumers applying a precautionary principle may prefer farmed scallops and methods that minimise bycatch.
