CDS welfare impact is profound and underappreciated. Affected dogs experience disorientation, anxiety, and loss of familiar routines — distressing experiences that cannot be communicated verbally. Night-time vocalisation and wandering causes sleep disruption for both dog and owners, sometimes leading to premature euthanasia decisions based on owner distress rather than dog quality of life. Welfare management requires both pharmacological and environmental approaches. Selegiline improves clinical signs in early cases. Antioxidant-enriched diets (vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, omega-3s) show evidence of slowing cognitive decline. Environmental predictability — keeping furniture in consistent positions, maintaining feeding routines, providing night lights — reduces disorientation distress. Mental stimulation through daily training, sniff games, and varied walks maintains cognitive engagement. Quality of life assessment should distinguish between dog suffering and owner inconvenience — many CDS dogs have good welfare with appropriate support.
