Mud crabs are farmed extensively across Southeast Asia and Australia. As decapod crustaceans with growing evidence of sentience, their welfare in aquaculture and during slaughter is receiving increasing scientific and regulatory attention.
Mud crab welfare in aquaculture and the live trade involves multiple welfare challenges. Individual housing to prevent cannibalism is necessary but creates social isolation for animals that may have welfare-relevant social needs. Claw-binding during transport and live sale restricts feeding ability and causes prolonged mechanical stress to the claws — a practice that should be replaced with housing designs that prevent cannibalism without restraint. Water quality in holding tanks is frequently poor, with high ammonia and low oxygen during the live trade. Slaughter welfare is the most significant concern — mud crabs are large, robust animals that survive for extended periods under thermal challenge, meaning ice slurry immersion takes many minutes to induce unconsciousness. Spiking through the nerve ganglia, or commercial stunning devices, offer faster and more welfare-positive alternatives. Consumer awareness and regulatory pressure are driving industry interest in improved practices.
