IVDD is one of the most painful and welfare-significant neurological conditions in dogs. Rapid diagnosis, appropriate pain management, and timely surgical intervention determine whether affected dogs recover mobility and comfort.
IVDD welfare demands urgent response to acute episodes. Dogs in IVDD spinal pain crisis experience severe, incapacitating pain — they hunch their back, cry when touched, and are unable to walk normally. Immediate analgesia with NSAIDs and opioids is the first welfare priority. Neurological grading determines management — grades 3–5 (paresis to paralysis) require urgent MRI and surgical assessment. The critical welfare window is narrow: dogs that lose deep pain sensation and do not undergo decompression within 24–48 hours have significantly worse outcomes. Post-surgical rehabilitation through physiotherapy and hydrotherapy dramatically improves recovery quality and speed. Dogs that do not regain ambulation can maintain good welfare with wheelchairs, regular bladder expression, and attentive home nursing. Prevention through weight management and restricting jumping in at-risk breeds reduces IVDD incidence. Breeding selection away from extreme chondrodystrophic conformation is the long-term structural welfare solution.
