The behaviour is fundamentally an expression of frustrated rooting motivation redirected onto penmates — addressing the underlying motivation through organic rooting materials is more effective than any other single intervention. Straw reduces tail biting more effectively than any enrichment object, confirming the rooting motivation hypothesis. Stocking density above welfare threshold triggers competition and aggression — ensuring adequate space per pig is complementary to enrichment. Health management matters: sick pigs are more frequently victimised and may become bitten before illness is detected.
