Barramundi welfare is affected at multiple production stages: larval rearing with cannibalism risk, grow-out stocking density, water quality management, handling during harvest, and slaughter. The species is increasingly produced under high-density conditions in tropical nations with minimal welfare oversight. Key welfare priorities include density limits during grow-out, mandatory size grading to reduce aggression, water quality targets for dissolved oxygen and temperature, gentle handling protocols during grading and harvest, and stunning before slaughter. Percussive stunning is effective for this species but rarely applied in commercial settings where live or live-chilled sale is preferred. Consumer and retailer pressure is the primary lever for welfare improvement in markets where regulation is absent.
