Beak trimming creates a painful trade-off: the procedure causes measurable acute pain and can result in chronic neuromas, but injurious pecking in untrimmed flocks causes suffering and mortality. The welfare ideal is to eliminate both the trigger (overcrowding, stress, poor enrichment) and the intervention. Countries that have successfully moved away from routine beak trimming demonstrate it is achievable with the right combination of strain selection, stocking density reform, and enhanced environmental management. For producers not yet able to eliminate trimming, day-old infrared treatment with validated pain management is less harmful than hot-blade trimming of older chicks. Advocacy should focus on timelines for phase-out backed by husbandry investment, not merely voluntary pledges.
