Shrimp present a welfare case that is ethically contested but practically significant at scale. While the sentience of shrimp is less certain than vertebrates, their physiological stress responses, avoidance behaviours, and social responses to injury in conspecifics suggest precautionary welfare measures are warranted. The primary welfare concerns in intensive shrimp farming are overcrowding, water quality failures, rough handling during harvesting and grading, and inhumane slaughter — commonly by ice slurry, which may cause prolonged suffering rather than rapid insensibility. Improvements are available: reduced stocking densities, automated water quality monitoring, gentler harvest methods, and rapid chilling or electrical stunning at slaughter. The scale of shrimp production makes even small improvements in per-individual welfare hugely significant in aggregate.
