Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offer salmon farming with reduced environmental impact but introduce distinct welfare challenges including high stocking densities, water quality management demands, and stress from artificial environments.
RAS salmon farming trades the environmental welfare problems of open-net pen systems — sea lice, disease spillover to wild fish, escapes — for a different set of welfare challenges inherent to intensive land-based rearing. The ability to control environmental parameters precisely is a welfare advantage, but commercial pressure drives density toward the upper limit of what water quality systems can manage, creating chronic background stress. Carbon dioxide management is a critical but frequently under-monitored variable; elevated CO2 causes acidosis, behavioural changes, and immune suppression. Welfare-optimised RAS facilities operate at densities below 60 kg/m³, invest in CO2 stripping infrastructure, and maintain redundant life-support systems. Consumer demand for RAS salmon should be paired with supply chain transparency about density and water quality standards.
