Channel catfish welfare is shaped by the specific challenges of intensive warm-water pond aquaculture: dissolved oxygen crises, disease outbreaks favoured by high stocking densities, harvest crowding stress, and slaughter without stunning. The summer dissolved oxygen crash — when high temperatures and algal respiration deplete oxygen overnight — represents one of the most significant acute welfare emergencies in US aquaculture, often resulting in mass mortality preceded by oxygen deprivation stress. Welfare improvements include automated oxygen monitoring and emergency aeration, density management, disease prevention through water quality maintenance, and the introduction of electrical stunning systems at processing facilities. Industry-wide adoption of welfare standards requires both regulatory pressure and buyer requirements from major retail and foodservice purchasers.
