Farming pike perch presents distinct welfare challenges arising from their specialized predatory biology. Juveniles must be carefully size-graded frequently to prevent cannibalism, which causes significant mortality and injury to smaller fish. The transition from live prey to formulated pellets is stressful and often leads to reduced growth and health problems for individuals that fail to adapt. Pike perch are acutely sensitive to ammonia spikes and low oxygen levels — welfare deteriorates rapidly under suboptimal water quality. Intense lighting used in some facilities conflicts with their crepuscular and nocturnal habits. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) can provide more controlled conditions but require meticulous management. Welfare assessment should include monitoring fin damage, wound prevalence, feeding response rates, and behavioral indicators of stress.
