Pangasius (basa/tra fish) is one of the world's most traded farmed fish species. Intensive production in Vietnam's Mekong Delta raises significant welfare and sustainability concerns for this high-volume industry.
Pangasius aquaculture is one of the most intensive fish farming systems globally, exploiting the species' physiological tolerance for low oxygen to push stocking densities far beyond what other farmed fish could survive. While pangasius can technically survive these conditions, welfare science indicates they do not thrive under them — chronic stress, elevated disease incidence, and immune suppression are documented outcomes of extreme crowding. Their ability to survive does not equate to absence of suffering. Harvesting methods in many operations involve draining ponds and crowding fish into progressively smaller areas before manual sorting — a process involving considerable handling stress. Pre-slaughter stunning is not universally practiced. As a high-volume, globally traded commodity, welfare improvements in pangasius farming would have significant aggregate impact on fish suffering. Consumer awareness and retailer sourcing commitments can drive improvement.
