Turkeys farmed commercially face severe welfare problems rooted in intensive selective breeding for rapid growth, leading to painful musculoskeletal disorders and inability to perform natural behaviors.
Commercial turkey production represents one of the most extreme examples of selective breeding for production traits at the direct expense of animal welfare. Modern broad-breasted white turkeys have been bred so far from their wild ancestors that their own biology causes suffering: skeletal deformities, cardiovascular failure, chronic lameness, and an inability to reproduce naturally are routine outcomes of the breeding program. These animals live in barren sheds with minimal enrichment at high stocking densities, unable to express natural behaviors including foraging, dust bathing, and flying short distances. Routine mutilations are performed to manage the injurious pecking that results from overcrowding and stress. Welfare improvements require addressing the breeding program itself — heritage breed alternatives and slower-growing varieties offer significantly better welfare outcomes. Consumer demand for high-welfare turkey products can drive industry change.
