Channel catfish and African catfish are major aquaculture species in North America and Europe respectively. Their welfare in intensive systems is affected by crowding, water quality, and harvesting practices.
Catfish welfare shares many characteristics with other intensively farmed fish, with some species-specific considerations. Their ability to breathe air allows survival in oxygen-poor conditions — but survival is not welfare. Catfish crowded beyond comfortable densities show behavioral stress, reduced feed conversion, and increased disease susceptibility. Their barbels are highly sensitive mechanosensory organs analogous to mammalian whiskers — damage from crowding-induced aggression or poor handling reduces sensory capability and indicates welfare harm. African catfish farmed in RAS systems can be maintained in conditions of good water quality, but economic pressure toward high densities remains a welfare challenge. US channel catfish farming methods — large outdoor ponds seined for harvest — create handling stress during crowding and transfer. Electrical stunning is increasingly used before slaughter in progressive operations. Improving density management, handling protocols, and stunning adoption would significantly reduce catfish welfare costs in both systems.
