Feedlot cattle welfare involves a combination of acute events and chronic environmental stressors. The transition from pasture to feedlot involves transport stress, diet change, commingling of unfamiliar animals, and novel environment — a convergence of stressors that suppresses immunity and precipitates respiratory disease in a significant percentage of animals. Once in the feedlot, cattle live in confined pens with limited behavioral freedom: no grazing, restricted locomotion, and social disruption from high turnover group composition. Extreme temperatures — heat in summer, cold in winter — affect cattle that often have inadequate shade or shelter. Mud accumulation causes foot rot and physical discomfort. The concentrated grain diet required for rapid finishing causes a shift in rumen pH that can result in acidosis — a painful metabolic condition. Welfare-positive improvements include shade provision, dust control, prompt disease treatment, and transitions to finishing systems incorporating some pasture access.
