Aquaculture welfare science has undergone a quiet revolution in the past twenty years, moving from near-complete neglect to a recognized field with validated assessment tools, species-specific research, and policy applications. The scientific consensus has solidified significantly on the capacity of commercially farmed fish — including salmon, trout, sea bream, tilapia, and catfish — to experience pain and chronic stress. This recognition has driven welfare improvements including pre-slaughter stunning adoption, reduced stocking density guidelines, and water quality standards in some jurisdictions. However, the field remains underfunded relative to the scale of the problem: annual farmed fish production numbers in the hundreds of billions of individuals, yet welfare research investment is a tiny fraction of that devoted to terrestrial farm animals of comparable numbers. Critical knowledge gaps remain for many farmed invertebrate species, and translation of research findings into industry practice is slow without regulatory requirements or consumer pressure. The next decade of aquaculture welfare science needs both more research and more effective mechanisms for translating findings into practice.
