Hybrid striped bass welfare shares characteristics with other intensively farmed predatory fish — aggression, oxygen sensitivity, and handling stress are primary concerns. Their aggressive feeding behavior means that in mixed-size groups, smaller individuals are frequently outcompeted for food and suffer chronic nutritional stress. Regular size grading to maintain uniform cohorts is a welfare-positive management practice that also improves production efficiency. Dissolved oxygen management is critical; brief hypoxic events cause immediate behavioral stress and prolonged low oxygen causes physiological damage. Temperature management affects immune function and disease susceptibility across the year. Harvesting methods in most US operations do not routinely include pre-slaughter stunning — carbon dioxide stunning or electrical methods are available and used by some producers but not standard. Given the welfare science consensus on fish pain capacity, improving slaughter welfare for striped bass represents a meaningful opportunity for producers to reduce aggregate welfare cost.
