In good lemming years, Arctic foxes thrive — abundant food supports large litter sizes and healthy body condition. In crash years, foxes must survive on alternative prey including birds, eggs, carrion, and marine mammals, with significantly reduced welfare outcomes including malnutrition and kit mortality. Climate change is disrupting these already challenging dynamics by altering snow conditions — rain-on-snow events create ice layers that block access to subnivean prey space, causing starvation events. Red fox range expansion northward, facilitated by warming temperatures, creates competition for territories and resources that Arctic foxes have historically not faced. The Scandinavian Arctic fox population, isolated from larger Siberian and North American populations, has been the subject of intensive conservation including supplementary feeding programs during lemming crashes — a direct welfare intervention that improves survival during the most critical food scarcity periods.
