Dehorning and disbudding of cattle causes significant acute pain and is routinely performed without adequate analgesia in many countries. Genetics-based alternatives offer a path to eliminating this painful practice.
Cattle dehorning represents a significant and largely avoidable welfare cost imposed on tens of millions of cattle annually. Horns are sensitive structures containing blood vessels and nerves — their removal or destruction causes acute pain whose intensity is demonstrated by behavioral and physiological stress responses that persist well after the procedure. Local anaesthetic significantly reduces acute pain; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs address the prolonged inflammatory pain that follows. However, surveys consistently show that significant proportions of farmers across major cattle-producing countries perform dehorning without adequate analgesia. The most elegant welfare solution is elimination of the need for dehorning through the use of naturally polled genetics. Polled sires are increasingly available in dairy and beef breeds, and selecting for this trait over generations can eliminate the need for dehorning entirely. This genetic pathway to eliminating a painful procedure represents one of the clearest opportunities for welfare improvement in cattle farming with full economic compatibility.
