Axolotls are Critically Endangered Mexican salamanders that are neotenic — retaining larval features throughout life. Their welfare in aquatic settings requires cold, clean water and species-appropriate management.
Axolotl welfare in aquatic settings is primarily determined by water temperature, quality, and appropriate housing. Temperature is critical and non-negotiable: even brief exposure to water above 23-24°C causes acute stress with behavioral indicators including surface gulping, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Chronic elevated temperatures impair immune function and accelerate disease. Water quality must be maintained with regular partial water changes and effective biological filtration — axolotls are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite accumulation. As solitary animals by nature, cohabitation with conspecifics requires careful management: axolotls are cannibalistic toward each other, particularly when different sizes are housed together. Substrate choice matters for behavioral welfare — coarse gravel can cause gut impaction if accidentally ingested during feeding; fine sand or bare-bottom tanks are safer. The enormous captive axolotl population — while providing educational value — is largely genetically distant from wild stock, making captive animals poor sources for conservation programs without careful genetic management.
