The space available to pigs in commercial farming systems directly affects their physical health, behavioral expression, and psychological state. Understanding minimum space requirements is essential for welfare reform.
Space allowance is one of the most intensively studied variables in pig welfare science, yet regulatory minimums remain well below what research shows pigs need for adequate welfare. At legal minimum EU densities, pigs cannot lie fully extended simultaneously, cannot perform rooting or exploratory behavior on meaningful substrates, and are chronically unable to avoid aggressive pen mates. Tail docking — the removal of part of the tail to reduce tail-biting injury — is a direct welfare consequence of space deprivation and frustration in intensive systems. The EU has required that tail docking only be performed where risk assessment justifies it, but routine docking persists in most member states. Higher space allowances combined with enrichment provision (straw, hanging chains, rooting substrate) dramatically reduce aggression and tail-biting without requiring costly structural changes.
