Their omnivorous diet requires variety — fruit, honey, insects, and protein sources — to prevent nutritional monotony and stereotypic behavior. Sun bears are among the most commonly rescued animals from the wildlife trade, arriving at sanctuaries severely malnourished and psychologically damaged from confinement in small cages. Rehabilitation involves gradual reintroduction to natural substrates, forest environments, and complex foraging opportunities. Bile farming imposes extreme suffering — animals spend years in crush cages unable to turn around, with open wounds from bile extraction catheters causing chronic pain and infection.
