Livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) provide effective predator protection but require appropriate socialization, training and care to achieve good welfare.
Livestock guardian dogs work independently under challenging conditions — exposure to predators, harsh weather and the demands of continuous livestock monitoring. Their welfare depends on appropriate selection, socialization and ongoing management. Dogs that are poorly matched to the role or inadequately supported suffer from overwork, malnutrition or medical problems. Well-cared-for LGDs that bond well with their flocks appear to find their role enriching.
