Zoo nutrition directly affects welfare at every level: a nutritionally complete diet supports immune function, reproductive success, behavioral expression, and healthy aging. Common nutritional welfare failures include vitamin A deficiency in reptiles causing eye problems and mouth rot; thiamine deficiency in fish-eating birds and mammals causing neurological disease; iron storage disorder in fruit-eating birds including mynahs; and obesity in large carnivores given sedentary lifestyles and calorie-dense commercial diets. Modern zoo nutrition programs use species-appropriate whole foods — browse, live insects, whole prey where appropriate — combined with scientifically formulated supplements.
