Axolotls are critically endangered in their native Mexican lake habitat, surviving almost entirely as a captive species. Their unique biology and conservation urgency make them important zoo ambassador animals.
Axolotl welfare in captivity depends critically on water quality — they are highly sensitive to ammonia, nitrites, and temperature. Water temperatures above 22°C cause chronic stress and immune suppression; above 24°C is dangerous. Their external gills are delicate and easily damaged by aggressive tank mates, rough handling, or poor water flow. Diet requires variety — earthworms, bloodworms, and pellets — to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Axolotls are largely solitary and can injure each other when housed together, particularly during feeding. The contrast between their near-extinction in the wild and abundance in captivity highlights a conservation paradox: captive populations provide no direct benefit to wild populations without structured reintroduction programs.
