Sows — female breeding pigs — face some of the most severe welfare challenges in industrial agriculture, including prolonged confinement and repeated reproductive cycles.
The sow's welfare journey involves repeated gestation (approximately 114 days), farrowing, nursing, and re-impregnation in a cycle that provides little recovery time. Gestation crates prevent all natural behaviors including rooting, social interaction, and postural changes, causing chronic frustration and muscle weakness. Farrowing crates, while reducing piglet crushing, prevent sow-piglet bonding behaviors and cause significant distress. Group housing systems with proper management offer substantially better welfare outcomes but require investment and skill. Sow welfare is one of the most impactful areas for advocacy given the number of animals affected globally.
