With billions of shrimp killed annually in aquaculture, improving end-of-life welfare through effective stunning methods could represent one of the highest-impact animal welfare interventions possible.
The scale of shrimp production makes end-of-life welfare one of the highest-leverage intervention points in all of animal welfare. If shrimp are sentient — and the scientific evidence increasingly supports this — then billions of animals annually experience the suffering of conscious killing through icing or hot water immersion. Electrical stunning devices capable of rendering shrimp insensible exist and are increasingly adopted in premium markets. The economic and logistical challenge is scaling these methods to commodity shrimp production. The Shrimp Welfare Project, founded in 2021, has made this their primary focus, working with major shrimp producers on feasibility, cost, and adoption of humane stunning. Consumer and retailer pressure on this specific issue creates direct incentive for adoption.
