Beak trimming is routinely performed on laying hens to prevent injurious pecking. The procedure causes pain, and breed selection offers a path toward eliminating it.
Beak trimming presents a genuine welfare trade-off: the acute and potentially chronic pain of the procedure versus the severe welfare harm of injurious pecking and cannibalism that can affect entire flocks. Infrared beak trimming, the modern standard, causes tissue damage and disruption to sensory nerves in the beak — an organ with high innervation. Whether chronic pain persists depends on the severity of trimming. The fundamental solution is removing the conditions that drive injurious pecking: overcrowding, barren environments, poor nutrition, and inappropriate light levels. Breeds selected for reduced aggression — developed specifically for intact-beak management — are now available and perform well in enriched systems. The Nordic countries demonstrate that non-trimming is viable in appropriately managed systems, setting a precedent for global adoption.
