Axolotl welfare in captivity centers on water quality and temperature management. Their neotenic biology means they are perpetually sensitive to environmental parameters that would stress most amphibians. Water above 24°C causes fungal infections (Saprolegnia), immune suppression, and metabolic stress — problems common in pet axolotls kept at room temperature without cooling. Proper tank filtration maintains water quality without creating excessive flow (axolotls are poor swimmers against current). Their social needs are limited — they can coexist but are not obligately social. Axolotls held in research settings for regeneration studies may experience welfare impacts from experimental procedures that require careful ethical oversight. The enormous captive population means that even modest welfare improvements in pet husbandry guidelines would benefit millions of individual animals.
