Decades of selective breeding have transformed Atlantic salmon production. The welfare implications of domestication and genetic improvement deserve ongoing scrutiny.
The welfare consequences of extreme selective breeding for growth in salmon are real and documented. Salmon selected purely for rapid growth show higher rates of heart abnormalities, eye cataracts, and spinal deformities — each causing chronic pain and dysfunction. The Salmon Breeding Consortium has worked to include disease resistance and structural soundness as explicit breeding objectives alongside growth, which represents welfare-positive progress. Sea lice resistance breeding is particularly important: lice cause tissue damage and chronic stress, and the treatments used to control them (medicinal baths, mechanical removal) also cause acute welfare harm. Breeding salmon that are naturally more resistant to lice could reduce both the suffering of lice infestation and the welfare costs of treatment.
