Positive Welfare in Cattle: Beyond Absence of Suffering to Genuine Flourishing

The Five Domains model and positive welfare science are shifting cattle welfare from preventing harm to actively promoting positive experiences. This represents a paradigm shift in farm animal care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Progressive cattle welfare science now recognises that preventing suffering is necessary but insufficient for genuine animal welfare. Positive welfare encompasses experiences of pleasure, comfort, interest, and social connection that contribute to good lives for individual animals. Cattle given opportunity to play (particularly young animals), engage in social grooming, explore novel environments, and choose behavioural repertoires show indicators of positive affective states. Practical positive welfare interventions include brush provision, access to outdoor environments with varied terrain, social grouping that enables bonding, positive stockperson interactions, and environmental enrichment. These are not frivolous extras — they improve immune function, reproductive performance, and product quality alongside welfare outcomes. The challenge is developing reliable, practical positive welfare indicators that farmers and auditors can use systematically.
